I don't like overproduction, stuff like layering that's impossible to recreate live, so I guess if youve got a really straightforward live oriented heavy metal band and the albums have stuff like a backing guitar and a 2-part lead, or something like that, then it does get in the way. I usually like bands, that are less about atmosphere and more about riffs & songs & etc, to have a more basic, real-to-the-band's-physical-possibilities sound. Baroness' second EP was recorded totally live except for vocals and sounds so full and 3 dimensional, which I think is just cool as fuck.
Check out the song transitions, they are so perfect. The perfect balance between positive and negative space makes me hard. More bands should just let their music have space.
