What would you choose if you had to?

I think this is quite tough, because each of these genres has lots of cool stuff, and in some aspects they are a bit similar, but if you had to really go into details, there's some difference in the instrumental side of things.

And the fact that some power metal bands use alot of symphonic elements, and that some of it is quite "happy" sounding, also makes it differ from Heavy Metal... Of course one could also claim that the lyrics are different from each other, however, with some bands, the difference isn't big. I think it's mostly in the instrumental side of things, and the mood of the songs that the difference lies.

I think I'll have to go with Heavy Metal.

By the way, I just wanted to add that the reason why I chose Heavy Metal instead of Power Metal, is only because I listen to it more, not because I have a problem with happy sounding metal, as some metalheads do.

(I'm not like some of those black metal dudes who can't get the music evil enough, quite the opposite, I don't mind listening to metal that makes you happy, what's so bad about being happy? You might just enjoy it!..oh gosh!!!!11)

J/K, so don't get offended, but I've mainly seen black metal dudes all kinds of places talking bad about Power Metal just because some of it is very happy sounding, and it has led me to believe that some of them aren't exactly the most open-minded people you'll come across.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify that I'm not one of those, before a war breaks out

I love them both, but I'll take heavy metal. It has more punch, plus, most of my favorite bands are heavy metal.

Well, I like fantasy. Most Heavy metal lyrics are stupid and all they talk about is metal in general. I do like Heavy, but Power is better. Its usally faster as well.

Some heavy metal incorporates fantasy stuff as well, for an example, just take 3IoB, and I'm sure there's other bands as well. Power sometimes is faster, yes, but I find heavy metal to be heavier often, but I guess it depends on the band as well, of course.

Well, I also chose Power Metal because most bands I listen to are PM. I don't know any Heavy Metal bands I like...
But I'm not much into those subgenres... I think I know some HM bands but don't know it ;)

3 Inches Of Blood are probably Heavy/Power though from all I've heard. They're a bit too melodic for just Heavy Metal imo.

Heavy Metal, Power comes from Heavy and some power metal bands play both styles.

Yes, Power evolved from Heavy, but it's become a style on it's own now.
