View Full Version : Thrash metal VS. Death metal

Which style do you enjoy the most? Its Thrash for me. I love the rough vocal style, but Death metal is to rough. I don't like vocal's that you can't really understand. Thrash also has great guitar work. There's a few good Death bands like Cannibal Corpse and Nile, but they get a little repetitive after awhile. My favorite Thrash bands are Pantera, Megadeth, The Old Metallica, Slayer, as well as many others.

I think I'd say that I like Death Metal better. I don't really listen to Thrash as much as I do Death Metal. Death is one of my very favourite styles though. Not that I don't really like Thrash or anything. Sometimes I am in a more Thrashy mood, but I just don't listen to it quite as much.

Whats trash metal?
Metallica's latest album St. Anger is trash metal, or should I say trash-can metal. Just listen to the drum sounds and you shall understand where the name comes from.
I'm not a fan of either, but I probably like thrash metal a bit more.

Death metal is probably the most wide-spreaded metal-genre ever (next to black metal), and none of it sounds the same (except technical death metal)

You got to love the famous Death Grunt and the fucking sound that will wake you up in the morning and that will scare a baby into tears!!!! When it comes to Death metal its the drums and the voice that make it, the guitar is always the same tones but when played with technicality, even better!!

a little bit of both genres- thrash and death is good. i believe there are more, talented and succesful thrash metal bands. it's hard to stand out today, i think, if ur a death metal band. but the small number of great death metal bands that are currently active are badass as shit. it's kind of hard to say- i retract that second sentence...

Thrash is not type caste like death metal. Thrash expresses far more variation in attitudes. Hearing someone growl about satan and death gets boring after a while. I like bands that occassionally smile for photo shoots.

Although it is close, and I really like the old school death/thrash fusion sound (Protector, Pestilences debut, Solstice, Messiah), probably more than either genre :P
The biggies of death metal are overall way better than thrashes big 4, but the less known thrash bands win over death metal imo.

If you're listening to those two bands no wonder you enjoy Thrash more. There is way better Death metal out there. Cynic,Death,Atheist,Possessed,Morbid Angel,Vader, etc. They're all better.
Now, to answer this particular thread, Death Metal.
Thrash is a boring genre too me. There is just a lot of generic music in thrash metal. It's really repetitive aswell at times, and quite boring in my opinion. I'm a pretty open minded listner, but thrash is probably one of my least favorite genre's now. At one time it was all I would dare listen to. Metallica was the shit, Overkill was the shit, etc. Now, however, I've grown to apdapt more metal genre's and bands, and I'm learning there is bands within the genre of thrash better than Metallica, and Overkill. Such as Vio-Lence. They're very underrated, as they had a huge part in the thrash metal scene. So, in all I suggest everyone thats a huge thrash fan for Metallica and Slayer and doesn't listen to anything else, you hit the other bands up. I'm not trying to convert ANYONE I'm trying to open people's minds.

Yes, but resistance of musical evolution just leads to stagnation. There are things I don't like in pretty much every genre, that doesn't mean have to badmouth it all.
I just badmouth most of it.

I agree with that. All I'm saying is somebody could think thrash is better than death without being an advocate for stagnation so much as change in a different direction.

Thrash is pretty much done with, though. Every possible combination has been tried, and now thrash acts are just rehashing old ideas. It wasn't bound to last long anyway, since thrash is all power chords and polka beats. Conversely, death metal is still in its adolescence, and is far more diverse and open-ended, allowing much more room for experimentation and change.

Thrash metal is way different than death metal in the approach. The thrash bands are mostly about attitude, you know, BEEEER! PARTIES! FUCK YEAH!
Death metal bands I feel are more focused on the music and the overall songwriting instead of the partying (with a few exceptions).

I agree with you, there. I just think there are legitimate reasons, not based in traditionalist bullshit, to prefer the music of thrash, in general, to the music of death, in general. Which has more potential is really obvious, since thrash has basically done all it can, and there's still a lot of directions death can go in, but the potential to make better music doesn't necessarily make better music.
For the record, I prefer death, I just doubt everyone who prefers thrash is stuck in the eighties, and doesn't want metal to evolve, some of them just may not like this particular evolution. For instance, somebody could say most people on this board are "stuck in the '90s" for preferring death metal to metalcore. I'm only saying that people can dislike a specific change without being against all change.

06-28-2009, 03:28 AM
It's not very easy to argue that metal as a genre was affected negatively by the advent of death metal. Death metal has a lot of potential ways to branch off, and it stands to reason that some of those are going to suck (deathcore). However, thrash is just thrash. It birthed death metal and then died.
VacantGreen

Thrash is alive, you could say, with the new wave. It won't be for long, though, these bands are just rehashing the stuff that their icons of the 80s did.

Thrash got kinda effed by genre naming. It really has nowhere else to go, as defined.

A genre's "survival" depends very little on record sales. It either evolves or dies out, that's the way it works. Natural Selection at work.

Yeah but still record sales means bands stay to have time to experiment and let a wider audience here the changes thus renewing interest in the matter.

Good sales actually makes a band less creative where they have little time to experiment before the deadline that is set by the label for their next album comes up.
Demon
06-29-2009, 12:48 AM
depends still sales are needed for a bands continued existence, yes I know there are people who create music and work ordinary jobs but still if you are a full time musician you have more time to practice and experiment
Master Cthulhu
06-29-2009, 12:50 AM
Not if your music is a "business" you don't. Your label doesn't want you to take risks in the sales DEPT. They set a deadline for a reason.
That being said, I can see your point, but my opinion differs.

Honestly, musicians with other jobs, I feel, tend to have more creative output, simply because they're not reliant on the success of their music. In this respect, they can stay truer to their own vision, popular or not, without having to bow to the demands of the masses to remain financially solvent.

That's why 9 times out of 10, a band's first 1-3 albums are their best. Once a label realizes that a band is getting fans, they make them pump out more of the same, and at a faster pace.
